What Does Brake Trouble Look Like?

If you’re not sure what brake trouble looks like in your car, you can easily overlook it or think the problem is something else. That is, until you aren’t able to stop at all. Learning what to watch out for is crucial, so MotivWerks has the information you need.

Weird Brake Noises

Any time you’re hearing some new noises from your car, that’s likely to get your attention. If you’re hearing some new noises when you press the brake pedal, you need to determine what’s going on. The types of noises you might be hearing can vary, but likely sound like squeals, grinding noises, or even squeaking sounds.

Vibrations While Braking

Another problem you might experience is vibrations, but only while you’re trying to stop the car. That can happen for a couple of reasons. The most common reason is that the rotor is uneven and that’s causing a bumping sensation when the rotor and the brake pad fit together. Other potential causes involve the calipers and the brake pads themselves.

Leaking Brake Fluid

Your car’s brake system is twofold. There are the mechanical parts of the brake system, including the brake pads, rotors, calipers, and more. Then there is the brake fluid. The brake fluid helps to give the brakes more stopping power than they can have on their own with just the mechanical parts. Leaks in the brake lines also mean that air can get in, which is not great news for your brakes.

Brake Lights Lit on the Dashboard

You probably already know that warning lights on the dashboard are not great news in general. It’s equally true with the brake system, too. If you see the brake light on when it shouldn’t be, you need to get your car’s brakes inspected as soon as possible. Never take chances with brake warnings.

No Brakes When You Press the Pedal

Any time that you press down on the brake pedal and there seems to be no response at all, that’s an emergency. Pumping the brake pedal can sometimes get enough brake fluid through the system to help you to stop safely. But it’s never a good idea to keep driving if your brakes have been unresponsive because the next time you might not be able to stop at all.
