A Malfunctioning Exhaust System Causes the Following Problems

To prevent your vehicle’s exhaust system from malfunctioning, schedule an inspection once a year at our auto repair shop. We will inspect the exhaust system and replace any parts that are wearing out. If it has been years since you’ve had the exhaust system inspected, you may start having problems with the system. Specifically, you may have one or more of the following issues.

An Extremely Loud Engine

If you end up with a damaged muffler or a muffler that has a hole in it, the engine will get much louder. This is especially true when you press down on the accelerator. When you do this, the engine will rumble loudly. Another cause of an extremely loud engine is a stolen catalytic converter.

Popping or Tapping Noises

The exhaust system will make popping or tapping noises when it leaks. The most common exhaust system part that makes these noises is the exhaust manifold. This being said, the manifold gasket can also make popping or tapping noises when you first start your automobile.

Poor Engine Performance

The exhaust system is designed to improve your engine’s performance by removing the exhaust from the combustion chamber. If the system gets clogged, the exhaust will back up into the chamber and affect your engine’s performance. Consequently, the engine will sputter and lag.

Reduction in Fuel Economy

Whenever an engine is not running efficiently it burns more fuel. There is no way to avoid this. In some cases, the engine control unit thinks extra fuel will solve the performance issue. Even if the unit does not add extra fuel into the chamber, the chamber will burn through the fuel more quickly.

Damaged or Hanging Tailpipe

Damage to the tailpipe can cause the exhaust system to malfunction. The tailpipe is the last part in the exhaust system, and your vehicle relies on it to push the exhaust away from the vehicle. It is easy for the tailpipe to get damaged by road debris and humid weather.

Noticeable Exhaust Odors

Finally, you may end up with noticeable exhaust odors in your passenger cabin if the exhaust system is clogged. You can also end up with exhaust in the passenger cabin if the system is leaking. Do not drive your automobile if you can smell the vehicle’s exhaust.
