Signs My Automatic Transmission Is Dying

One of the first signs that there is a problem with your automatic transmission is an illuminated check engine warning on the dashboard. MotivWerks explains that the transmission does not have a light of its own, so the engine control unit turns on the check engine light. Below, you will find the other signs that your automatic transmission is going bad.

Hesitation/Slips Out of Gear

Oftentimes, the transmission will hesitate before it shifts through each gear in the gear cycle. This can be an indication that the transmission fluid is too low or that the transmission is malfunctioning. A malfunctioning transmission will also slip out of gear by itself.

Refuses to Shift Through the Gear Cycle

The hesitation and slippage can lead to the transmission refusing to shift through the gear cycle. In other words, it will start off in first gear but will refuse to shift into second gear and so on. This can make driving your automobile nearly impossible because you cannot stay in first gear.

Refuses to Go Into Gear

Eventually, the transmission is going to become unresponsive if it is dying. In this case, you will move the gear shift from Park to Drive or Reverse and the transmission will do nothing. Consequently, the transmission will continue to refuse to go into gear until it is repaired.

Overheats/Smells Really Hot

You should head straight to our shop if you smell hot odors coming from underneath your automobile. This is a sign that the transmission is overheating. This can happen if the transmission fluid needs to be changed. As an aside, this is also a sign of a malfunctioning catalytic converter.

Leaks Transmission Fluid

If the transmission is leaking transmission fluid, you will see red spots on your garage floor. The spots will be located toward the center of your automobile rather than underneath the engine. There are many parts that can leak transmission fluid including a cracked transmission pan.

Makes Strange Noises

When the transmission shifts through the gear cycle, the only thing you should hear is the change in the engine’s RPMs. If you hear strange noises such as grinding, clunking, or humming, the transmission is telling you that it is in trouble and it needs to be serviced.

Vibrates the Vehicle

The same is true if your automobile vibrates when the transmission shifts the gears. All gear shifts should be smooth and seamless.
